It’s been a while since there has been an update to Church Radius or a post on this blog. If you’re wondering what’s going on, I’ll let you in on some upcoming news:
- There is an update coming soon with a fix for the problem reporting on date ranges, fund reports, and deleting donations. I’m just waiting for some code to be checked in from the developer who did the latter two.
- The main site is going to be updated to simplify navigation.
- There is going to be an open source, host-it-yourself version of Church Radius and eventually the ability to move your data between the host-it-yourself version and the ChurchRadius.com hosted version. The open source project will live at http://churchradius.org.
- A wiki-based documentation project and discussion forums will follow the open source release.
If anyone out there is interested in participating in the open source project (code or documentation), contact me at derek@churchradius.com.

At the request of a church, I’ve added a Phone Labels report. It works just like mailing labels but prints name and phone number instead of name and address. You can find the link for Phone Labels under the Reports tab.
Keep the feature requests coming!

Just a quick warning that there is a bug in the events calendar that is causing the demo account to freeze / timeout when attempting to view events. It has to do with some bad data. As far as we know, it’s not affecting any church accounts. It will be fixed soon.
UPDATE: All fixed. As always, let us know anytime you encounter a problem.

I am frequently asked why Church Radius was built as web-based software. Or alternatively I hear people raise concerns about using web-based church management software. There is lots to talk about on this so I’m going to split it up into a series of posts. Here are the 5 big reasons we offer Church Radius as web-based software:
-
No big upfront costs. This actually has more to do with Church Radius being subscription-based than web-based software. But on-demand / pay-as-you-go software makes the most sense over the web. Church Radius also doesn’t require churches to buy their own servers, which can be a tough upfront cost to absorb.
-
Nothing to install or backup. The less technical know-how required to use church software the better. The beauty of web-based software is that users do not have to worry about looking after the software. This is especially important for backups. In my experience, most churches do not have an adequate backup process. Backups need to happen regularly (at least once per day is best) and the backups need to be tested (remember, an untested backup is no backup at all). Church Radius users never have to worry about backups because we do them every night.
-
Available from anywhere. Church staff and volunteers are not your typical 9-5ers. The ability to access church management software from the church office or from home or while on the road was an important consideration for us when planning Church Radius.
-
Available on Mac and Linux. Not everyone uses Windows. Even in the same church office you can get a mix of users on Windows, Macs, and even Linux (if you don’t know what Linux is, don’t worry - you’re not alone).
- Everyone gets updates automatically. Sometimes getting the updates to your software is just as important as getting the software in the first place. Whether it be new features, bug fixes, or security patches, updates are an inevitability with software. Web-based software lets all users have the latest and greatest version without having to do anything or pay for an upgrade. It’s all included and it’s all automatic.
Stay tuned for more info on why we think web-based software is the best choice for most churches. I will also address the most common concerns I have heard about web-based church management software.
